OUR GOAL
Be Aware, Be at Choice
Japan’s gender gap is the largest among advanced economies.
There are educational gap in STEM and top universities, opportunity and financial gap at workplace,
and leadership gap in academia, government, and business.
While there are many contributing factors including unconscious bias and systemic discrimination, one factor we wanted to address was the limited opportunity to connect with people outside one’s primary community. Internalizing expectations of one's family and company can prevent women from questioning the status quo and lead them to quietly conform to/feel frustrated about societal norms.
Our goal is to create an inter-sector community to inspire and empower Japanese women to articulate success in their own terms and make more informed and resonant choices in their lives.
It is not just about achieving success in a traditional sense. Rather, we want women to be aware about the systemic pressures they are facing and make conscious choices that are in line with their values.
ABOUT US
Japanese Women Roundtable started as a discussion group among Japanese women at Harvard.
Pandemic and virtual platform provided us an opportunity expand the group to a broader community of Japanese professional women with global experiences, mostly in their late 20s to late 30s.
Currently, we have about 300 members from academia, government, non-profit, and business,
based in all over the world, including Japan/ Asia, US, Europe, Africa, and Middle East.
In this video, some members share their "turning point" in their life.
